November is National Diabetes Awareness Month

Imagine that to stay alive, you have to replace the function of one of your organs. Sounds heroic, right? Well, it is.

And this is the reality for the estimated 300,000 Canadians living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) who need to administer insulin every day because their pancreas cannot. Living with T1D is 24/7, there are no breaks and no days off. This is a superhero power – something that sets them apart from others.  You can’t always spot these superheroes, but they are among us.

Our goal this National Diabetes Awareness Month is to shine a light on these superheroes. Whether it’s those living with T1D, their families and friends, their health care teams, or the researchers working to improve lives and find cures, we want to acknowledge the strength and resilience of this incredible community in a unique way.

Create your T1D Hero card

As anyone living with T1D knows, it can feel like working a full-time job with no breaks, and no days off. Every day there are up to 300 decisions to make about eating, activity, rest and more just to maintain blood glucose levels. It is a disease that requires constant management – and even with the most vigilant attention there can be life-threatening complications.

Throughout November, help JDRF raise awareness of what life is really like with T1D. We want to spotlight our T1D superheroes, the caregivers and friends, and the researchers working tirelessly to get us closer to a world one day free from this disease.
