Many thanks to the close to 100 people from leading Edmonton companies and families living with type 1 diabetes who joined JDRF’s youth ambassador Alita for our Annual Corporate Community Breakfast at Chateau Nova February 22.
Alita, age 11, diagnosed with T1D in 2016, gave a compelling presentation at what her first 2 years have been like. From finger pokes and needles, to diabetes camp; from the trials and challenges of highs and lows in dance and school. The audience felt Alita’s disappointment upon hearing she missed out on sweet treats on Valentine’s Day but were happy to hear how much better she is finding day-to-day activities with her brand new insulin pump.
JDRF Walk of Cure Diabetes Cabinet Member John Haliburton of Sun Life Financial spoke about how his company’s long time support of the walk began as a chore but became a cause close to the heart for him and many on the Sun Life team. John provided the group with an overview of the annual events held by JDRF – walk, ride and gala and encouraged everyone to find the best fit for their business and to get involved.
JDRF Edmonton’s Chapter President, Howard McCann of Cushman & Wakefield highlighted major advancements in understanding and treating type 1 diabetes made possible by JDRF funding, including two current leading edge research studies at the University of Alberta.
Nayima Nadeem, Training Director of breakfast sponsor Academy of Learning spoke about their companies commitment, led by owners Audrey and Elmer Brattberg to the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, raising more than $43,000 to date from their campuses across Alberta. Nayima brought many to tears as she spoke so heartfully about the inspiration her team has found from our youth ambassadors and families since partnering with JDRF.
For information about the many ways your organization can sponsor or partner with JDRF, please contact Cindy Walker or 780-428-0343.

Community Engagement & Newly Diagnosed
A new diagnosis of type 1 diabetes (T1D) can trigger a range of reactions, including anger, sadness and guilt. Whatever your feelings, they are normal and you are not alone.
Life with T1D can pose challenges for every member of the family. Whether you have T1D yourself, are the parent or have a loved one with T1D, it takes time to adapt to the day-to-day demands of diabetes. Treatment options are improving all the time, and T1D does not need to prevent you or your child or loved one from living a full and active life. As time goes by, everyone will gain knowledge and confidence, and be able to celebrate successes, learn from mistakes, and move away from the intense feelings common immediately after diagnosis.
Until there is a cure, we want to provide information that will help you cope with the burdens T1D can impose, and take advantage of the help that is presently available. For more information please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or 780-428-0343.
JDRF’s Bag of Hope program is a free resource which provides information and support to families with children who are newly diagnosed with T1D. The Bag of Hope is filled with relevant diabetes education materials and supportive materials. If your child is 12 years or younger, you will also receive a Rufus Bear. This bear with diabetes is designed to help little ones cope and learn about insulin injections.
In addition to the Bag of Hope, you will automatically receive JDRF's newsletter to keep you abreast of JDRF’s efforts to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. You can request your Bag of Hope by clicking here.
For more information, please contact us at email@example.com or 780-428-0343.
Join us at Starbucks Southpoint (3227 Calgary Trail - In Chapters) to connect over coffee with other T1D parents or caregivers at our bi-monthly coffee meet up - the third Saturday of every other month at 10:00 am. Please note that we ask that you try not to bring your children so that everyone is free to speak about the highs and lows of living with T1D. Look out for the JDRF Sneaker on the table and we hope to see you there! Can't make it to this one? The next meet up will be:
- May 19, 2018
- July 21, 2018
- September 15, 2018
- November 17, 2018
Are you interested in attending a playgroup for young children with T1D? We are looking for 1-2 leaders to welcome new families as well as returning participants. The event will be held on a bi-monthly basis on alternating months to the Parent Coffee Group. JDRF welcomes location suggestions while we review prospective facilities suitable for children and caregivers. To insure continuation of the program JDRF will require simple feedback from those in attendance.
If you are interested, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or 780-428-0343.
Through our mentorship program, families and individuals touched by diabetes, can be paired with a trained mentor - someone who has experienced the challenges of being newly diagnosed. Family Mentors can provide information about diabetes resources and educate families about how they can help find a cure. Our mentorship program is free of charge and membership never expires!
Please note: our team can only share their personal experiences with you. We are not healthcare professionals and are unable to provide medical advice. The information provided by our team is not intended to take the place of medical advice, for which you should consult your doctor or other healthcare professionals.
For more information please contact Karen Zabinski or 780-428-0343.
