You can't eat that!
How many times have you heard this statement? For me, too many times to count. It never ceases to amaze me how many people think that they should be the one making food choices for me because I have type 1 diabetes (T1D). I've been in a room full of people who are offered something tasty, and then they get to me and suddenly the dreaded statement comes out of nowhere:
"Oh, sorry, Kim. You can't eat that."
I heard it at birthday parties when I was nine, and I continue to hear it decades later, now at work events. Depending on how I'm feeling that particular day, "You can't eat that," elicits different feelings. Sometimes anger, sometimes frustration, sometimes bafflement. I've tried various responses, but I still haven't decided on the best way to respond. I do know one thing, though. When it comes to food, I never tell people that they "can't eat that."
