Rider Profile: Mary Norris

Mary Norris

I have been participating in the JDRF Ride since 1989, while working for TD.  When I became involved, it seemed like a good cause and a great team building event in which to take part. At the first event I attended there were just a handful of bikes at the Toronto Delta Chelsea hotel, but we had a great time for a good cause!  !  I have been a dedicated participant ever since. I and have participated in the Toronto and Ottawa Rides.   Since 2005 I have been actively involved in the TD Insurance component within TD Bank Group (TDBG).  I am currently co-chair of the TDBG Toronto Ride Committee and am a member of the Toronto Ride Cabinet.  The enthusiasm and commitment of the TD Toronto Ride Committee is incredible and maintains the momentum of this event each year!

In the past, I have been a captain and a rider for the Toronto Ride and am a captain again this year.  Typically we start to raise initial funds by emailing a link to our fundraising page to friends and family. As a corporation we  hold silent auctions, jeans days/ weeks/ months, bake sales, and ‘donate your loose change’ campaigns.  I am fortunate to work at TD Insurance as employees have embraced this event and make it a success every year.  The number of riders, and the dollars raised have been growing continuously.  My team this year consists of TD Insurance Technology executives from the Toronto office.

JDRF Ride 2012

Originally I had no direct connection to type 1 diabetes (T1D), but in the mid 1990’s my brother was diagnosed with T1D. It was shocking news for our entire family. Since his diagnosis, I have had a very different focus on T1D, and have had a very different ‘enthusiasm’ for the JDRF Ride and for fundraising.  I now keep my brother, sister in law, and my beautiful nieces in mind whenever I think of T1D.  I truly hope that through the JDRF Ride for Diabetes Research we can help to find a cure so that families of today and tomorrow will not have to deal with the challenges my brother and thousands of others have to manage on a daily basis.

On behalf of JDRF we would like to sincerely thank Mary and the TDBG Ride team for their commitment to the JDRF Ride for Diabetes Research. With your support you are helping us provide necessary funds to T1D research and bring us one step closer to a cure.
