Celebrating a New Year

After the countdown and the celebrations are over, it’s always hard to believe another year has passed. In 2014 we have new opportunities and challenges awaiting us, and it is also a great time to look back and celebrate the important achievements of the previous year.

During 2013, JDRF held numerous fundraising events across the country. Families and teams joined their communities at the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes, corporate Canada geared up for some friendly competition at the JDRF Ride for Diabetes Research, and guests were dazzled at our Gala events. Together these events raised more than $18 million to support JDRF and leading edge type 1 diabetes (T1D) research! This could not have been achieved without the dedication and support of our participants, donors, volunteers and partners. We know that together in 2014 we will be able to reach new heights and raise even more funds to find a cure.

Living with and managing T1D can be difficult even for the most seasoned individual. In 2013, more Canadians than ever before accessed our Outreach tools. Through our Bag of Hope, the School Advisory Toolkit, the Adult Type 1 Toolkit and our Mentor Program we were able to give back to the T1D community across Canada. At our Diabetes Research Infosiums we highlighted progress being made through JDRF-funded research and our attendees the chance to ask questions directly to a researcher and hear from a T1D motivational speaker.

Support for T1D research continued to be stronger than ever in 2013. New investments to fund cutting-edge research allowed for the expansion of JDRF Canadian Clinical Trial Network to western Canada, and this funding is focused specifically on a cure for this devastating disease. We are confident that this expansion will put JDRF research on a path to achieve great results.

With a successful year behind us, January is also a time to focus on new beginnings. It is a time for us to look forward and build on opportunities to ensure the new year will hold more progress and successes than any year before it. Our mission is clear and united with our communities across Canada, we are determined to find a cure for T1D and its complications. Thank you for your support in 2013, we hope you will continue on the journey with us in 2014 to make this the most impactful year at JDRF yet.
