Carol Hagan is our March Volunteer of the Month

Carol Hagan is our March Volunteer of the Month! Her son Thomas was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at six years of age; he is now 24. Carol’s mother also had T1D and was diagnosed at 40. We recently caught up with Carol to ask her a few questions about her volunteer work with JDRF.

Q. How did you become involved with JDRF?

A. I became involved with JDRF Vancouver as their first volunteer in 1996.

Q. How long have you been volunteering with the Foundation?

A. I have been volunteering with JDRF for 18 years.

Q. What is your involvement with JDRF?

A. My involvement includes the Gala, JDRF Ride for Diabetes Research, and the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes. I have been involved with the Rockin’ for Research Gala since its inception in 2000. I am the Auction Chair, and on the Executive Committee.

Q. What do you enjoy most about volunteering with JDRF?

A. Helping to find a cure! I also enjoy working with the amazing volunteers and staff! Everyone is so motivated to work hard for a cure.

Q. How do you hope your efforts will make a difference in the T1D community?

A. I think when a community works together - with a single goal - their combined energy creates a wonderful network for all volunteers to feel a big part of the success of that group. I believe that all volunteers make a huge contribution no matter how much time they can spend volunteering. Volunteering is good for the soul!
