Peter Heffernan recently retired after 30 years of service at Scotiabank, but he certainly didn’t let that stop him from going above and beyond for the 2014 Toronto JDRF Ride for Diabetes Research!

Peter formed the first-ever Ride team comprised exclusively of Scotiabank retirees, the Scotia Second Winds. The 4-person team raised $18,000; Peter himself raised an incredible $15,265 for type 1 diabetes research! His unique fundraising strategy included giving copies of his autographed Mandarin CD to his sponsors.

He’s already looking ahead to next year’s Ride, with hopes of seeing fellow retirees involved in JDRF Ride cities across the country. Peter’s enthusiasm knows no bounds as he challenges other retirees to try to get involved by riding or sponsoring retiree riders since “You’re only as old as you feel”!

Thanks for all your hard work and support, Peter, and for proving that being retired doesn't mean you have to slow down. You’re truly moving research forward!

Help Shape a Future Without Diabetes

JDRF relies on its dedicated volunteers to achieve its mission to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. These individuals, organizations, and companies commit their time, energy, money, and services – we couldn’t do it without them!

Whether it’s the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes, the JDRF Ride for Diabetes Research, the Promise Ball, Office Administration, Outreach, or other JDRF initiatives, we require a considerable amount of volunteer help.

Please contact Asha Lewis at alewis@jdrf.ca or 647-789-2035 to learn how you can get involved.
