The 2012 Starlight Soiree was truly a magical night. The room was filled with beautiful people, all bidding on fantastic silent auction items, and enjoying the delicious array of food stations serving delicacies that tantalized your taste buds. The room was a buzz during Fund A Cure as guests opened up their hearts and wallets to generously make a donation in hopes of one day finding a cure.
We are very proud to announce that the evening raised $110,000!
Thank you to everyone who attended for making this inaugural event such a huge success!

Mentor Program
Your child has just been diagnosed with diabetes. What do you do now? When a loved one is diagnosed with diabetes, it can be a traumatic and stressful time. Fear, sadness, anger, and confusion about how to manage the disease can leave families feeling alone and overwhelmed.
You're not alone. JDRF's Family Network Volunteers can help.
JDRF’s Family Network Volunteers can provide much needed emotional support, information about diabetes resources, education about what families can do to help find a cure and, most of all, be a good listener. JDRF’s Family Network is free of charge, and we are here to help as long as you need it. Please note, our volunteers are not healthcare professionals and are unable to provide medical advice for which you should consult your doctor or other healthcare professional.
If you would like to participate as a JDRF mentor please complete the Mentor Application Form and email to Avery Morris at amorris@jdrf.ca.
For more information, please contact Avery Morris at 905.608.8067 ext. 225 or amorris@jdrf.ca.

A special Thank You to Karate Chops Diabetes

The fists were flying and boards were breaking at the Powerade Centre on November 24 as the Academy of Martial Arts (AMA) stepped into the ring to help fight diabetes during a 12 hour karate marathon. The uniqueness of this event dazzled spectators with 15 separate demonstration rings going simultaneously throughout the day, and two successful Guinness World Records being set. The event raised a phenomenal $75,000 for JDRF; a great start for their first of a three year commitment of $250,000.

Volunteer Opportunities
JDRF always welcomes new volunteers to help out at our fundraising events, as well as within the office. For more information, please contact Jessica Berzins 905.608.8067 ext. 221 or jberzins@jdrf.ca.

Help Shape a Future Without Diabetes
JDRF relies on hundreds of volunteers to continue on its mission of finding a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. These dedicated individuals, organizations, and companies commit their time, energy, money, and services to our search for a cure – we couldn’t do it without them!
Why volunteer? Because one person can make a great difference.
Each year, JDRF needs an army of volunteers to make our events a success. There are many ways you can help make a difference:
- Help out at the office. We have mailings to stuff, stamps to stick, photos to file, envelopes to seal, calls to make, and a database to keep up-to-date.
- Serve on a Committee and help execute the Chapter’s communications strategies.
- Work at an event. Pass out t-shirts or help set up TELUS Walk sites. Be part of the team organizing our events.
- Participate in our Government Relations Program. Let your voice be heard! Sign up to be an Advocate and contact your elected representatives about diabetes-related policies. Hundreds of advocates across the country write letters, send emails and faxes, and make phone calls to their elected Members of Parliament whenever an issue of importance to diabetes or healthcare policy surfaces.
For more information on any of these volunteer opportunities, please contact Jessica Berzins at 905.608.8067 ext. 221 or jberzins@jdrf.ca.
